El concepto de Guacalito de la Isla se establece sobre ciertos principios fundamentales, entre cuales se encuentran el desarrollo sostenible, la conexión con la naturaleza, y el compartir experiencias multigeneracionales. Las medidas que estamos dispuestos a tomar para rescatar a uno de los residentes más emblemáticos, grandes y antiguos del proyecto no debieran de extrañarle a nadie. Cuando nos percatamos que la construcción de la glorieta del portón principal amenazaba la supervivencia de un magnífico ejemplar de árbol de Guanacaste (entrelobium cyclocarpum), la solución era evidente: había que trasladar el árbol. Don Carlos Pellas incitó a su equipo a no escatimar esfuerzos ni gastos.

Entre los árboles endémicos a las tierras bajas tropicales de Centro y Sur América, el Guanacaste es considerado el más majestuoso y estéticamente agradable. Es el árbol nacional de la hermana república de Costa Rica y nombra a la provincia más famosa de ese país. El Guanacaste puede alcanzar alturas impresionantes de hasta 35 metros, con troncos de hasta 4 metros de diámetro. Son capaces de sobrevivir por varios siglos.

Trasladar a un hermoso árbol de 150 años, 10 metros de altura y con un peso de un millón de libras, puede ser una odisea formidable. A pesar de que nuestro árbol no es el mas grande jamás transplantado, se trata de una hazaña de ingeniería compleja que exige meses de preparación. Contratamos a Environmental Design, una empresa estadounidense especializada en transplante de árboles, para implementar la mudanza.

Los preparativos iniciaron en febrero del año en curso con la excavación de una zanja amplia de 2 metros de profundidad alrededor de la base del árbol, a distancia radial de 1 metro desde el tronco. Esta “cebolla” posteriormente se revistió de madera y el árbol se dejó en su lugar para que las raíces se acostumbraran a su nuevo recinto. El árbol logró sobrevivir y prosperar. Al paso de algunos meses estaba ya listo para ser trasladado.

A mediados de noviembre los especialistas arbóreos llegaron para ejecutar la mudanza final. Optaron por arrastrar el árbol en vez de izarlo debido a su peso colosal. Se cavó una trinchera de 1 metro de profundidad lo suficientemente ancha para acomodar a la cebolla y dos retroexcavadoras, enlazando al árbol con su futuro sitio de reposo a 40 metros de distancia. Un par de retroexcavadoras posteriormente insertaron 24 tubos de carcasa de acero de pozo petrolífero de 3 metros de largo, formando una línea recta paralela al suelo debajo del revestimiento de madera de la cebolla. Luego colocaron un cable de acero por debajo de la fila de tubos y lo halaron en ambas direcciones para rebanar cualquier raíz que continuara enganchada. Se colocaron dos ligaduras de acero alrededor de ambos extremos de las tuberías y esta plataforma rígida se sujetó firmemente al conjunto del árbol con cadenas de acero de 3/8” y telas de costal.   Una vez que se logró deslizar el cable sin resistencia por debajo de la tubería, la cebolla quedó desligada del suelo y nuestro Guanacaste estaba casi preparado para andar.

El día siguiente, 18 de noviembre de 2011, una multitud se aglomeró a presenciar el nacimiento de una leyenda. Hasta el mismo Don Carlos, con séquito de reporteros y equipos de filmación, se apareció para asistir al espectáculo. Con todo en juego, una retroexcavadora y un buldózer cuidadosamente elevaron el extremo delantero de la plataforma de tubería mientras otra máquina colocaba una placa metálica con borde curveado debajo del ensamblaje de tubos, así fabricando una especie de trineo que también se fijó a la estructura del árbol. A medida que el buldózer impulsaba desde atrás a toda máquina, las dos retroexcavadoras tiraban de cables acoplados al borde delantero del trineo en una maniobra coreografiada. Todos contuvimos la respiración al ver las delicadas ramas de la copa mecerse en el cielo azul brillante y el Guanacaste por fin se movió!

Al transcurrir casi ocho horas, el Árbol de Don Carlos, como le hemos apodado afectuosamente, se situó exitosamente en su nuevo hogar entre apretones de mano. En adelante, brillará como destaque central del recién acabado complejo del portón principal, dando la bienvenida a la nueva Familia Guacalito y su descendencia durante los siglos venideros. Su leyenda rendirá eterno tributo a nuestro compromiso de proteger el maravilloso entorno de la Costa Esmeralda nicaragüense. Aquellos que tuvimos la suerte de presenciar el espectáculo jamás olvidaremos el día en que el árbol se movió. Unos pequeños pasos para un hombre, un gigantesco salto para un árbol.

Sustainability, a connection to nature, and multigenerational experiences are three of the main guiding principles upon which the concept of Guacalito de la Isla is founded. It should come as no surprise that we would go to great lengths to save one of our project’s most emblematic, enormous, and longest-lived residents. When construction on the main entrance roundabout threatened the livelihood of a beautiful specimen of Guanacaste tree (enterolobium cyclocarpum), the solution was obvious: we had to move the tree. Don Carlos Pellas encouraged his team to spare no expense or effort.

The Guanacaste is considered the most majestic and esthetically pleasing tree endemic to the tropical lowlands of Central and South America. It is the national tree of neighboring Costa Rica and lends its name to that country’s most famous province. Guanacastes can grow to an awesome height of 35 meters, with trunks measuring up to 4 meters in diameter. They can survive for hundreds of years.

Moving a gorgeous, 10 meter tall, 150 year-old, 1 million pound tree can be quite an ordeal. Though ours is not the largest tree to ever be transplanted, this is a complex engineering feat requiring months of preparation. Environmental Design, a tree transplant specialist company from the US, was hired to implement the move.  

Preparations began in February of this year, with the excavation of a 2-meter deep trench around the base of the tree, at about a 1-meter radius from the tree trunk. This “rootball” was encased with a wooden box and the tree was left in place for the roots to settle into the new enclosure. The tree survived and thrived. A few months later, it was ready for travel.

In mid November, the tree specialists arrived to execute the final move. Due to its massive weight, they decided to drag the Guanacaste rather than hoist it. A 1-meter deep trench wide enough to accommodate the rootball and two track hoe excavators was dug connecting the tree to its new resting site 40 meters away. Next, the excavators took turns inserting 24 3-meter oil well casing pipes in a straight row parallel to the ground beneath the rootball, and a sharp steel cable was swung below the pipe layer and pulled back and forth to slice through any remaining roots. Two steel clasps were placed around either ends of the pipes, and the rigid platform was snuggly fastened to the tree structure using burlap covers and 3/8” steel chains. As soon as the cable was able to slide freely underneath the pipes, the base of the rootball was dislodged and our Guanacaste was all-set to move.

The next day, November 18th, 2011, an eager crowd assembled to witness a legend in the making. Don Carlos himself was on-hand for the momentous occasion, with reporter and film crews in tow.  With everything on the line, a backhoe excavator and a bulldozer gently lifted the front end of the pipe platform, while a third machine inserted a metallic plate with a curved edge underneath it, forming a sled which was also carefully fastened to the tree structure. Bringing up the rear, the bulldozer pushed with all its might while 2 backhoes tugged from cables at the front of the sled in a choreographed maneuver. Everyone held their breath as the tall branches swayed in the light blue sky. The Guanacaste finally moved!

A full eight hours later, handshakes broke out as Don Carlos’ Tree, as we fondly call it, was finally hauled into place as the crowning centerpiece of the Main Gate Complex. This majestic tree will stand guard to welcome the new Guacalito Family and their descendants for generations to come. Its legend will pay eternal tribute to our commitment to protect the breathtaking environment of Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast. Those of us lucky enough to witness the spectacle will never forget the day the tree was moved. A few small steps for a man, one giant leap for a tree.  

En las pequeñas aldeas en los alrededores de Guacalito de la Isla predominan los pescadores y pequeños agricultores. Al igual que la mayoría de las comunidades rurales en Nicaragua, estas familias dependen de la capacidad de su puesto médico local para atender sus cuidados de salud primarios.  Cuando Guacalito de la Isla contempla hacer inversiones que ayuden a mejorar la calidad de vida de nuestros vecinos, ninguna es más importante que apoyar el trabajo, las capacidades y fortaleza del puesto de salud local.

La Dra. Jeanine Quintana y dos enfermeras prestan servicios de salud a una población local que supera 2.000 personas entre hombres, mujeres y niños. Si los pacientes viven demasiado lejos para llegar a pie, la Dra. Quintana programa visitas a sus comunidades. No obstante, la mayoría de las consultas se realizan allí mismo en el puesto de salud. Antiguamente, la clínica atendía a la comunidad en un espacio físico muy reducido. No contaba con oficina de consultorio privado ni salas de recuperación. Ni siquiera tenía agua potable.

El equipo de Guacalito de la Isla profesa que “La gente saludable conforma comunidades saludables”. En ese espíritu, recientemente tomamos la decisión de darle una remodelación completa al puesto de salud para que pudiese brindarle un mejor servicio a la comunidad. Contratamos a Andrés Arcia, un constructor lugareño, para agregarle 25 metros cuadrados al edificio existente, incorporando dos baños nuevos, una sala de recuperación y una pequeña bodega. Este anexo también agregará suficiente espacio para un consultorio privado, una farmacia, y un área de recepción. Instalaremos tuberías de agua potable y una nueva entrada techada.

En Guacalito creemos firmemente en que “negocios exitosos no pueden existir dentro de sociedades fracasadas”. Nuestra responsabilidad llega más allá de simplemente ser un buen vecino. Contribuir con nuestra comunidad es, y seguirá siendo, un placer y privilegio para nosotros.

The small villages surrounding Guacalito de la Isla are comprised largely of subsistence farmers and fishermen.  As in most rural communities in Nicaragua, these families depend heavily on the strength of the local health clinic as their primary health care facility.  When Guacalito de la Isla considers making investments that will help improve the quality of life for our neighbors, none are more important than supporting the work, capabilities and strength of the local health clinic.  

Over 2,000 men, women, and children in the area immediately surrounding Guacalito de la Isla benefit from health care services provided by Dr. Jeanine Quintana, the clinic physician, and two nurses.  If patients live too far away to arrive by foot, Dr. Quintana will schedule community visits, however, most consultations are done under the roof of the community clinic.  In the past, the clinic has served these 2,000 community members in a structure with very limited space. There were no enclosed doctor’s offices, recovery rooms, or even running water.

The team at Guacalito de la Isla believes that “Healthy people make healthy communities.” In that spirit, we recently made the decision to completely remodel the clinic so it would better serve the community.  Guacalito de la Isla contracted a local builder,  Andres Arcia, to add another 25 square meters to the building, which will provide 2 new bathrooms, a recovery room, and a small warehouse.  This expansion will also provide enough space for a private consultation area, pharmacy and reception area.  New septic and potable water systems will be installed, as well as a brand new covered entrance.  

It is the firm belief of Guacalito de la Isla that “successful businesses cannot exist in failed societies.” We believe that it is more than just our responsibility to be a good neighbor. It is, and always will be, our pleasure.

El mes de diciembre conmemora un momento especial para el Hotel boutique de 5 estrellas del proyecto Guacalito de la Isla. La construcción de los Beach Villas (villas playeras) del hotel está en curso y la primera Villa modelo está lista para brindarle al mundo un vistazo de lo que está destinado a convertirse en una experiencia incomparable de hospitalidad al estilo nicaragüense.

El 4 de diciembre de 2011, se celebró un convivio de playa en Guacalito para nuestros propietarios, amigos, familia e invitados especiales. Asistentes al evento recibieron un tour especial de la villa modelo de Mukul, auspiciada personalmente por los ejecutivos de Guacalito.

December marks a development milestone at Mukul, Guacalito de la Isla’s 5-star boutique hospitality centerpiece. Construction has begun on Mukul’s Beachfront Villas, and the first Villa model is now complete — ready to give the world a glimpse of what is destined to become an incomparable Nicaraguan hospitality experience.

On December 4th, 2011, a private Open House event was held on the beach at Guacalito de la Isla for current owners, friends, family, and special guests. Our guests received a special tour of the completed Mukul model, hosted personally by Guacalito executives.

Mukul consists of four distinct hospitality components: Casona Mukul, our main Estate Lodge, is the heart of the hotel providing food, drink and recreational activities. Kabu Spa provides guests with world-class oceanfront pampering and healing. Spacious Beach Villas provide oceanfront accommodations, while mountainside Bohios provide spectacular views of the beach from above. Mukul strives to create a private family-style experience for our visitors that delivers the very best in local touches and Nicaraguan hospitality while optimizing guests’ enjoyment of the climate, beach views, and pristine natural setting.

The Beach Villas were designed to incorporate architectural styles that are typical of the Central American design aesthetic; with plaster walls and tile roofs recalling the look of characteristic coastal casitas. Jorge Campos Terán es el Director General de Proyecto de Guacalito de la Isla desde septiembre de 2011. Encabeza todos los grupos involucrados en el proyecto y tiene bajo su cargo asegurar que todos los componentes del desarrollo estén listos y cumplan con los estándares de excelencia de un resort de 5 estrellas de clase mundial.

Esencialmente, Jorge está a cargo de la integración de todos los equipos para realizar la visión del proyecto e implementarla a través de servicios y operaciones permanentes de calidad impecable. Esto incluye la coordinación de los trabajos de equipos ya presentes, el posicionamiento de los grupos actualmente integrándose y la materialización de la visión final por el equipo que quedará a cargo de las operaciones. Este último incluirá el personal de Mukul, los administradores del campo de golf y el club de playa, además de las cuadrillas de mantenimiento de instalaciones, administración de  propiedades, paisajismo, seguridad, recuperación de fauna, y servicios a propietarios.

A Jorge le cuesta disimular su entusiasmo por la obra. <<Es un proyecto totalmente único>>, insiste, a pesar de haber colaborado en muchos emprendimientos turísticos. << Su ubicación inigualable, concepto singular, y forma de desarrollo lo hacen un hito >>. Porqué está tan convencido? Porque Guacalito ostenta ciertos elementos sobresalientes. Por ejemplo, la responsabilidad social empresarial se está manejando directamente en sitio y ya está funcionando. Segundo, el proyecto se integra armoniosamente con su entorno natural, reflejando un compromiso con el medio ambiente. Finalmente, apunta al empuje, la energía, la pasión, y la solidez financiera. Estos factores, regidos por la unidad de criterio impartida por Don Carlos Pellas, garantizan un respeto al concepto integral, que no pierde su esencia autóctona en el diseño, conceptualizacion y ejecución. <<Es un proyecto en Nicaragua, de Nicaragua, y para Nicaragua>>, puntualiza.

De familia mexicana-española y originario de Acapulco, Jorge desarrolló una afinidad por el medio turístico. Amplió sus capacidades mediante estudios en Administración Hotelera en México y una Maestría en Administración de Empresas (MBA) del Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey. Lanzó su carrera en el programa de Executive Management Trainee de Marriott en Puerto Vallarta. Luego ingresó al equipo de estructuración de negocios de Grupo Situr y fue asumiendo cargos de progresiva responsabilidad en Starwood, Burke-EDL, Premier Resorts, y Grupo Questro en México y Estados Unidos. Jorge ha participado en más de 50 proyectos, acumulando casi 20 años de experiencia y destrezas en el sector hotelero e inmobiliario. No existe prácticamente ningún área de la industria en donde Jorge no se haya desempeñado.

Con una trayectoria tan nutrida, es interesante descubrir el porqué de su decisión de unirse a nuestra empresa. Enfatiza que la oportunidad le llegó justo en su momento: el desafío de dirigir el proyecto insignia que pondrá a todo un país en el mapa turístico mundial le resultó demasiado tentadora. Siente que Nicaragua está a punto de alcanzar su pleno potencial. Jorge considera que actualmente no hay mejor país para afectar el desarrollo ni mejor emprendimiento para dedicarle su inagotable entusiasmo y energía que Guacalito de la Isla.

Jorge Campos Terán joined Guacalito de la Isla as Project Managing Director in September, 2011. He heads all groups involved in the project and is in charge of ensuring that all components of the development are ready and meet the standards of excellence of a world-class 5-star resort.

In essence, Jorge oversees the integration of all teams to fulfill the vision of the project and implement it through permanent services and operations delivering impeccable quality. This includes coordination of teams already present, positioning of the groups currently being assembled, and the materialization of the final vision by the team that will remain to handle ongoing operations. The latter will include the staff of Mukul, the Botanica Golf Course and the beach club, along with grounds maintenance, property administration, landscaping, security, fauna rehabilitation, and homeowner services.  

Jorge has a hard time hiding his enthusiasm for our undertaking. “This is a totally unique project”, he insists, in spite of having collaborated on a wide array of similar ventures. “Its unbeatable location, singular concept, and style of development make it a milestone”. Why is he so convinced? Because certain aspects of Guacalito are outstanding. For instance, corporate social responsibility is managed directly on-site and is already fully functional. Second, the project blends harmoniously with its natural setting, reflecting a commitment to the environment. Ultimately, he singles out drive, energy, passion, and financial strength. These factors, underpinned by the unified criteria imparted by Don Carlos Pellas, guarantee a profound respect for the entire concept, which never sacrifices the native essence of its design, conceptualization, and execution. “This is a project in Nicaragua, from Nicaragua, and for Nicaragua”, he points out.

Originally from Acapulco and of Mexican and Spanish descent, Jorge developed a natural affinity for tourism. Consequently, he acquired his education in Lodging Management in Mexico and earned an MBA from Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey. His first engagement was in Marriott’s Executive Management Trainee program in Puerto Vallarta. He later joined the business structuring team at Grupo Situr, subsequently assuming roles of progressive responsibility at Starwood, Burke-EDL, Premier Resorts, and Grupo Questro in Mexico and the US. Jorge has participated in over 50 projects, accumulating nearly 20 years of experience and skills in the real estate and lodging sector, having worked in practically every segment of the industry.

With such a well-rounded trajectory, it is interesting to know what led to Jorge’s decision to join our project. The opportunity knocked on his door at precisely the right moment: the challenge of directing the landmark project which is set to put a whole country on the world’s tourism map was simply too tempting to resist. “Nicargua feels like it’s ready to fulfill its full potential”. No other country provides such a prospect of positively influencing its development, and no enterprise could be more deserving of Jorge’s inexhaustible energy and enthusiasm than Guacalito de la Isla.

El 4 de diciembre, Guacalito de la Isla celebró su convivio de 2011 con la Familia Guacalito e invitados especiales. Don Carlos Pellas y el personal de Guacalito fueron los anfitriones del evento, que contó con una asistencia que superó las 200 personas. Don Carlos conmemoró la apertura del evento con unas palabras de bienvenida inmerso en el entorno tropical de Playa Manzanillo.

“Si la patria es pequeña uno grande la sueña”

Con esta inmortal dedicatoria de amor a su país del ícono nicaragüense Rubén Darío, Don Carlos abrió su discurso expresando porqué se siente tan apasionado por este emprendimiento. Nicaragua es un país que ha sobresalido mucho más de lo ameritado por su tamaño en una variedad de materias: las artes, las finanzas, el ron, los puros, el béisbol y el boxeo, entre ellas. Su visión asciende a nada más y nada menos que Guacalito de la Isla asuma su lugar entre estos superlativos nicaragüenses de renombre mundial. Hará todo lo necesario para erigir el legado detonante que será la insignia turística de nuestro país.   El proyecto dispondrá de amenidades que van a figurar en las cumbres de sus categorías.

Luego Carlos Hernández, Presidente y Director General de Pellas Development Group, anunció el lanzamiento de  Las Terrazas, nuestro nuevo producto residencial. Invitó a los presentes a pasar al showroom en el Ranchón donde el equipo de ventas estaría disponibles para aclarar incógnitas. Al recibir la palabra, David McLay Kidd, diseñador del Botanica Golf Course, relató sobre haber tenido que hacer lo imposible para no tocar ni un árbol al delinear el concepto que inspiró nuestro campo de golf. Motivó a la gente a que lo acompañara luego a estrenar el césped por medio de un torneo de Más Cercano al Pin. Se degustaron un suntuoso almuerzo tradicional y refrescos mientras los invitados platicaban bajo los cocoteros o paseaban por las suaves arenas de Playa Manzanillo.

Además de música, tertulia y traguitos, la agenda del día incluyó recorridos por la recién terminada Beach Villa modelo del Hotel Mukul.  Hal Thannisch y el equipo arquitectónico hotelero se apostaban para impartir conocimientos en cuanto a los matices destacados del diseño innovador de Mukul. Para el traslado de invitados, contamos con transporte continuo hacia el Hotel Mukul y el Hoyo 3 de Botanica Golf Course. Muchos también aprovecharon para hacer giras por el proyecto y visitar sus terrenos en La Reserva, además de conocer los sitios de los futuros Verdemar Oceanview Villas y el nuevo proyecto de Las Terrazas, desde donde pudieron admirar vistas panorámicas. On December 4th, with over 200 people in attendance, Guacalito de la Isla held its 2011 Open House for Guacalito friends & family and distinguished guests. Don Carlos Pellas and the Guacalito staff hosted the gathering.  Around noon, the event kicked off with Don Carlos delivering opening remarks at Playa Manzanillo.

Opening with Nicaraguan icon Rubén Darío’s immortal ode of love for his country, Don Carlos’ eyes sparkled as he explained why he feels so passionately about this project. Nicaragua is a country that has punched above its weight in many fields, including the arts, finance, rums, cigars, baseball, and boxing. His vision amounts to nothing less than for Guacalito to take its place among these world-renowned Nicaraguan superlatives. He will do whatever it takes to create the detonating legacy that is set to be our country’s insignia in global tourism. The project will feature amenities ranked at the pinnacle of their class.

Next, Carlos Hernández, President & CEO of Pellas Development Group, announced the launch of Guacalito’s newest product, Las Terrazas. He invited our guests to visit the showroom inside the Ranchón where the sales team was standing by to answer inquiries. David McLay Kidd, designer of the Botanica Golf Course, then took the floor and spoke of the lengths he went to to spare trees while describing his concept for the golf course. He encouraged everyone to join him later for a Closest to the Pin competition to test-drive the greens. Sumptuous local dishes were served while guests mingled under the palms or took leisurely strolls on Manzanillo’s powdery sands.

Besides mingling, music, and refreshments, the day’s agenda included tours of Hotel Mukul’s recently completed model Beach Villa. Hal Thannisch and the hotel site architects were available to provide insights on the nuances of Mukul’s innovative design. Paul Duesing, Mukul’s interior designer, created elegant yet relaxing interiors with top-of-the-line amenities, managing to harness the best of a luxury beach resort in an intimate family atmosphere while gracefully incorporating refined Nicaraguan touches.

Shuttles provided continuous transportation to Hotel Mukul or to the tournament at Hole 3 of the Botanica Golf Course.  Guests could also take tours of the project or visit their homesites on La Reserva, as well as admire the panoramic vistas from the sites of the future Verdemar Oceanview Villas and the new Las Terrazas project. Everyone came away pleasantly impressed with the progress on display, proving Pellas Development Group’s strength and reliability.

To cap off the evening, Don Carlos had a surprise up his sleeve. He summoned the party to the beach to liberate this month’s batch of sea turtle hatchlings.  It is a rare privilege to witness the tiny offspring of these magnificent, timeless creatures take their first swim into the sea at the start of their life’s journey—a voyage which we sincerely hope will see them return to grace Guacalito’s shores once again when their turn comes to nest. Under a crimson dusk, we celebrated the end of a memorable afternoon secure in the knowledge from our day’s events that our friends and family will, just like Manzanillo’s turtles, always continue coming home to Guacalito.

Siempre es un momento emocionante recibir la escritura del terreno para una nueva residencia, mas aun cuando se trata de un lugar tan colmado de maravillas como Guacalito de la Isla. Nuestro personal está en proceso de coordinar reuniones individuales con cada uno de los propietarios de La Reserva con fin de ejecutar una breve ceremonia de cierre mediante el cual se traspasa el derecho de tenencia de su nueva propiedad. El 25 de noviembre Katia Lacayo, Directora de Mercadeo y Ventas, acompañada por Edwin Mendieta y Alberto Rondón de nuestro departamento legal, tuvo el placer de recibir al Sr. Alfredo Palazio y su esposa Nilska Mierich de Palazio en nuestra oficina. Después de repasar la documentación, estos nuevos vecinos de La Reserva firmaron las escrituras de compra/venta mediante el cual Marina de Guacalito les cede la propiedad de sus terrenos. Este documento se devolverá al catastro donde el proceso de inscripción culmina en un lapso de 30 días.

Poseer escritura de compra/venta significa que el propietario en La Reserva queda autorizado para comenzar a construir sobre su terreno, marcando un momento histórico dentro de lo que será la comunidad fundadora de Guacalito de la Isla. Llegó el momento de ir materializando ilusiones, segun el proceso de construccion acordado. En dicha forma, garantizamos en conjunto un desarrollo ordenado y armonioso que dará paso a una comunidad atractiva y funcional que no solamente proporcionará una sobresaliente experiencia de vida playera, sino también estimulará un mejor potencial de apreciación.

Receiving deed to your new property is always an exciting moment, especially in a place endowed with the wonders of Guacalito de la Isla. Our staff is now in the midst of summoning all neighbors of La Reserva for a brief individual signing ceremony that transfers title to their property. We are very excited about entering this new phase of development.

On November 25th, Katia Lacayo, Director of Marketing & Sales, along with Edwin Mendieta and Alberto Rondón from Legal, was pleased to receive Mr. Alfredo Palazio and Mrs. Nilska Mierich de Palazio at our headquarters. After reviewing documentation, these new La Reserva neighbors signed the titles in which Marina de Guacalito transfers ownership of their homesites. The documents are then returned to the national land registry for final inscription, which should be complete within a month. In the meantime, owners will receive a letter with a copy of their deed promptly after closing.

Having property title means La Reserva neighbors are now free to begin construction of homes on their own lots, marking a truly historic moment in what will be Guacalito’s founding community. Owners can now enter the creative phase of turning design into bricks and mortar through the agreed construction process. In this way, Guacalito’s orderly and harmonious development is guaranteed to result in an attractive, functioning community that not only provides a superb coastal living experience, but also nurtures better appreciation potential.

Una vez finalizado en 2012, el Botánica Golf Course de Guacalito será el mejor campo de golf de 18 hoyos de Nicaragua. David McLay Kidd de DMK Golf Design, su distinguido creador, viajó desde Escocia para asistir al convivio del 4 de diciembre. Para estrenar la cancha, auspició un concurso amistoso de Más Cercano al Banderín (Closest to the Pin) para el público presente en el evento. Esta fue la primera oportunidad para que nuestros invitados y los futuros residentes de Guacalito gozaran de la belleza escénica de este entorno único en la forma en que estaba destinado a ser.

La competencia se llevó a cabo en el Hoyo 3 a plena vista del azul profundo de las plácidas aguas de la Bahía de Manzanillo. Participaron un total de 30 jugadores, en su mayoría varones, pero incluyendo algunas damas y niños. Un nuevo juego de palos de golf Taylor-made Burner se proporcionó para asegurar que hasta los golfistas novatos pudieran participar.

El Hoyo 3 inicia con un área de salida situada sobre una plataforma elevada y separada de la calle por un barranco profundo que contiene un arroyo. El verde, apostado entre un bunker y una colina, queda a por lo menos unos 150 metros de distancia. La vista desde la zona de salida es simplemente espectacular.

En el concurso de Más Cercano al Banderín cada jugador tiene tres oportunidades para golpear una bola desde el tee de un hoyo par tres e intentar colocarla lo más próximo posible al banderín o meterla al hoyo en un solo intento.  Gana el jugador que logra reposar la pelota a la menor distancia del hoyo.

Como era de esperarse, nuestro mini-torneo inaugural estuvo muy animado. El nivel de talento de los participantes llegaba desde principiantes que jamás le habían pegado a la bola hasta expertos con técnica casi profesional.  El resultado fue una competencia entretenida en la que nadie quedó decepcionado. Entre bebidas y aplausos, todos alentaban a los participantes y gozaban del evento.

Don Eduardo Belli se coronó campeón al colocar la pelota a 4 pies de distancia al banderín. De premio, se llevó una canasta de productos Flor de Caña con todo lo necesario para celebrar a lo grande su victoria. Carl Ahlers y Enrico Palazio quedaron en segundo y tercer lugar. Andrés Valldejuli, nieto de nuestro campeón, ganó entre los niños.

Pronto algunos de los expertos presentes podrán sacarle el máximo provecho al grato entorno natural y fabulosas vistas del campo de golf Botánica. Al grueso de la Familia Guacalito, sin embargo, nos espera mucho tiempo de aprendizaje. Será solo cuestión de poco tiempo para que Guacalito tenga su propio equipo de golf, listo para medirse con sus huéspedes y compañeros en el campo destinado a ser una de las joyas más brillantes de nuestro proyecto.

The Botanica Golf Course at Guacalito will be Nicaragua’s finest 18-hole course upon completion in 2012. Its creator, David McLay Kidd of DMK Golf Design, flew in from Scotland to attend the December 4th open house event and host the Guacalito Friends & Family as they took a test-drive of the new grounds through a friendly “Closest to the Pin” competition. The event was the first opportunity for future residents and guests to enjoy the scenic beauty of this one-of-a-kind setting as it was meant to be.

The contest was held on the grounds of Hole 3 within view of the gentle deep-blue waters of Manzanillo Bay. A total of 30 contestants participated, predominantly men, but including some women and children. A new set of Taylor-made Burner golf clubs was provided to ensure that even aspiring golfers had an opportunity to partake.

Hole 3 begins at an elevated platform tee-box separated from the fairway by a deep rift housing a brook. Sandwiched between a hill and a bunker, the putting green lies a good 150 meters away. The view from the teeing ground is simply spectacular.   

Closest to the Pin involves each contestant teeing off on a par-3 hole and getting 3 opportunities to drive a ball as close as possible to the pin or score a hole-in-one.  The player whose ball lands the closest distance to the hole wins the prize.

As expected, our first foray into mini-tournaments was lively and agitated. The level of talent on display ranged from rookies who could barely hit the ball to seasoned pros. This made for great entertainment and our contestants did not disappoint. Everyone partook of cheers, drinks, and laughs.

Mr. Eduardo Belli was the winner of the event, coming within 4 feet of the pin.  As a prize, he took home a gift basket brimming with Flor de Caña brand merchandise and all the tasty rum required for a fitting victory celebration. Carl Ahlers and Enrico Palazio rounded out the top three, with our winner’s grandson, Andres Valldejuli, taking the top spot among the kids.

While some of the experts will soon be teeing off and taking full advantage of the remarkable natural scenery and breathtaking views at Botánica, most of the Guacalito Friends & Family can look forward to a fair bit of practice. In practically no time, Guacalito will sport its own golf squad, ready to take on guests and fellow Family members on the grounds of what will surely be one of the jewels of the Guacalito project.

Eduardo Perez, Guacalito’s Power and Telecommunications Engineer, has lead the project, ensuring not only flawless installation and reliable performance, but aesthetic consistency and safety as well. All of the power and telecommunications lines at Guacalito de la Isla have been installed underground. This highly developed underground power and telecom system is extremely reliable and very low maintenance. Because the lines are buried they are less likely to be affected by winds or inclement weather, reducing the incidence of power or communications outages for Guacalito residents. The system is naturally immune to lightning and electrical phenomena, which makes it very reliable for this particular oceanfront location. The nature of underground lines also make them virtually inaccessible to the general public, which increases the security of the network as a whole, as well as information traveling to and from individual homes.

100% of the power lines have now been installed at Guacalito de la Isla, and negotiations with the power company are underway and proceeding well. The installation of telecommunication lines is also complete, promising unlimited bandwidth for voice, data and video usage for all Guacalito residents.

During the design and planning phases at Guacalito, our team has been dedicated to preserving the striking natural beauty of the land at all cost. Keeping power and telecom lines hidden from view is an effort to further enhance Guacalito’s overall aesthetic appeal and ensure the living experience at Guacalito is what is should be: A true connection to nature and daily enjoyment of spectacular ocean views.

Guacalito’s Road Engineer Alejandro Lau has carefully managed the installation of roads, car paths and pavers, ensuring travel from point to point within the community is safe, easy and visually enjoyable. Over 60% of the roads at Guacalito are now complete, with adoquínes, curbs and gutters.
